Every day in Brevard County there are frail and elderly residents who need your help. These seniors live at home, on limited incomes. They are able to live independently through supportive services such as the Volunteers in Motion program. A few hours of volunteer support, once or twice a week, can make a major difference in these senior's lives. Whether it is driving a van or answering a phone, our volunteers serve because they care. For information about how you can volunteer, contact Lori Hamilton, the Volunteers in Motion Coordinator, at 321-635-7999, or E-Mail Us!
Volunteers in Motion is a service coordinated by Space Coast Area Transit, the Senior Resource Alliance and Community Care for the Elderly program. The program began in 1996 in an effort to provide reliable transportation to Brevard County's elderly citizens who are unable to use Space Coast Area Transit services. Many of these citizens live at home because they cannot afford expensive nursing homes. Since its inception, Volunteers in Motion has been able to assist thousands of elderly individuals. Volunteers receive training by attending instructional classes outlining how they can best help the customers they will assist. When transporting customers, volunteers are provided with state-of-the-art vehicles that meet rigorous state and federal requirements. Most vans are wheelchair accessible. Recipient of Daily Points of Light Award
Instituted by President George Bush |
Due to the increase of requests for service by senior citizens in Brevard County, Volunteers in Motion has an immediate need to increase their volunteer base. Please consider helping our seniors maintain their dignity and independence by joining the awesome group of volunteers in this award-winning program.
The Volunteers in Motion program has been honored with two distinguished awards from the State of Florida. In 1997, the Governor's Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged honored Volunteers in Motion with the Volunteer Transportation Program of the Year Award. In 1998, this same organization awarded Mr. Eric Simon, one of our program's volunteers, with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Volunteers in Motion is proud to be the recipient of the Daily Points of Light Award for June 26, 2007. The award honors an individual or organization that makes a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others.
Originally instituted during the administration of President George Bush, the program was reinstated on January 1, 1998 by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Knights of Columbus.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush jointly chose the first two recipients. This level of outstanding recognition has been made possible because of the quality of volunteers in the program.
As Volunteers in Motion continues to grow, the organization is increasingly recognized as one of Brevard County's biggest success stories! To join this life sustaining effort, please fill out the Volunteer Application.
